They are somewhere else. Silent figures whose deepest feelings the viewer can sense, but who also leave room for the viewer’s own. Soft yet elusive. Powerful, strange.

Van Klaveren’s work grows out of observations, memories and inner images. Her figures, always women, are often placed in quiet, domestic settings and seem absorbed in their own thoughts. Flowers, plants and animals are recurring motifs. The scenes are recognisable, but there is almost always something slightly unsettling or out of place.

Maeve van Klaveren works with watercolour, pastel and charcoal on bamboo paper. Her distinctive technique gives the works a soft, almost tactile quality. Together with their sense of stillness and her highly individual visual language, this makes her work difficult to compare with that of others.

Van Klaveren exhibits regularly at Moving Gallery and at art fairs in the Netherlands and abroad. Her work has also found a growing international audience, with solo exhibitions at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery in cities including Berlin and London. In the Netherlands, she had a solo exhibition at Museum MORE, where her work is also part of the collection. Her work is held in numerous private and public collections across Europe, the United States and beyond.
