Zaida Oenema (1980) creates dynamic yet contemplative reliefs on paper. Drawn, cut, burned and folded - her work shows meticulous abstractions of transience in nature. Using graphite and watercolor, scalpel and soldering iron, the Dutch/Finnish artist creates works on the border between two- and three-dimensional forms. With extreme eye-hand precision, Oenema meticulously shapes line and surface through the rhythmic action of incision and repetition. Her process is marked by the rigor of human touch rather than mechanical construct. By working with recurring forms - burnt sun circles, incensed blades of grass, cut sawtooth waves - her picture plane is at once orderly and dynamic. As such, the surface changes with the interplay of material, texture and its response to light. For Zaida, the turning point in 2026 is exploring other materials like wood and cardboard.
