Disconcerting and detached: a blend of stories, dream images an alienating sculptures

In this duo exhibition, paintings by Anutosh and sculptures by Mariëtte van der Ven come together. The exhibition will be opened on Saturday 25 April 2026 by someone we can safely call a professional art lover: Ranti Tjan. That will be at approximately 4.30 pm.

From the beginning of this year, Utrecht-based artist Anutosh (1970) worked non-stop in Berlin on a new series of paintings. On the one hand, recognizably Anutosh: scenes and figures that are a picturesque blend of stories and dream images. But these paintings were clearly entirely new: this artist was in a flow and was clearly absolutely on form. Anutosh has a great track record as an artist, but his work had not yet been shown on this scale in his own city. We have that distinction then. And it was about time.

Mariëtte van der Ven (1967) has also been regarded for years as a top figure among Dutch sculptors and ceramicists. Her amazement and concern about how 'people' treat their fellow human beings and nature drive her to seek a language to let that wonder 'solidify'. The apparent realism is merely an illusion. Rather, it is symbolism, but not as we know it as an art movement: her sculptures, mostly made of porcelain, 'carry' the burdens of the contemporary world. Her sculptures take your breath away and evoke silence.
